Interview With: Silly Fools
Interview By: Rance D. Reed from GreenlandLive.net

Silly Fools are essentially an arena/modern rock band known best for their “big” sound.   The band has been together for over 10 years, and was founded by guitarist Ton (Jakrin Juprasert).  Ton, Tor, and Rang have been together since the bands second album “Candyman” and the current lineup was completed in 2006 when Ben joined as the new lead singer.  This signaled the beginning of a new era for Silly Fools, as we started to make songs in English, with the intent of introducing our music to other countries around the world.

Silly Fools was a name Ton came up with when the band was just starting up, the name was chosen by Ton when he opened a dictionary to a random page, closed his eyes and pointed to a random word.  The word Ton pointed to was “Silly”, the first definition was “Foolish”, and Silly Fools was born.  The original name was Silly Foolish, but was shortened to Silly Fools for the bands first EP.  As individuals musicians and songwriters they all have different artists who have influenced their music here are their responses to who has influenced their music,

As for Rang he listens to all kind of music varying from the Backstreet Boys right over to Dream Theatre, “I believe every song and artists has something different to be delivered and there is always different ideas hidden in each artists music; bass players like Victor Wooten, and John Myung from dream theatre are very big influences.”

Then there is Ton who mainly listens to Jeff Buckley, Jeff Beck, and Street Wise. Ton says, “that guitar hero has a big influence in his playing and I plays it everyday (laughing).”

Tor says, “one artist has mainly influenced me into the drummer I am today, John Bonham the drummer from Led Zeppelin.”

Last but not least Ben has a number of influences, and trys to listen to all kinds of music.  “If I had to name one, it would be Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters, as I really like his style, melodies, and lyrics.”

The Silly Fools have a pretty broad audience, from high school kids all the way up to people in there fifties.  Their biggest audience is probably college students and people in their late twenties and early thirties. "This is something we are proud of, as we try to make every song different to target a different range of fans.’"  As a group they just want to make a living doing what they love most which is playing music.  "We have the best job in the world!"  As for their goals with their English albums, they really want to introduce people to their music, and see how far they can go.  Silly Fools love their fans and their fans are what drive them to make great music, “We have a very solid fan base in Thailand, and we really feel we owe it to them to keep making music.  We also all really like performing, and enjoy playing together.”

Their latest album “One” is an album they are truly proud of, as it is the result of a team effort; they worked on this album together, with every member having equal input, and are they really pleased with how it sounds.  This is their first full album in English, so “One” is also like a new beginning for Silly Fools.  In songwriting everyone has their own part that they are responsible for.  The composers are Ton and Rang, who are responsible for creating most of the music.  Once rough demos are finished Tor puts down a drum track, and each person does their own homework.  Ton designs guitar lines and strings, Rang does his bass lines, and then Rang, Ton and Ben create the melodies as a team, then they pass the tracks to Ben who writes the lyrics.  Once everyone has done their homework they get together, listen, and make changes where necessary.  “We work as a team, which means that if someone doesn’t like something, we listen to the reasons and work it out.”  According to the Silly Fools selling 600,00 thousand copies of their ‘One’ album along with playing 300 concerts in one year have been a great time for Silly Fools, “this was a defining moment because it made our band so much closer as we were away from our families for a year and proved to ourselves that people wanted to hear our music.”
