Interview with: Esme Patterson
Written By: Rance D. Reed from GreenlandLive.net

You can describe the Denver, CO based band Paper Bird as Serendipity; the members of the band never really knew each other before they started playing music together.  Paper Bird began one night when a friend of the band made the suggestion to write a song and that night Paper Bird was born. According to Esme, 'we just started playing music together, and haven't stopped yet. Our music reflects that spontaneity, I believe.'  Paper Bird started out with the band name White Tiger, which was kind of a joke; so they played a free association game where each member in a circle sat and said random words until Paper bird came out.   Lately Paper Bird is mostly influenced by our musical friends, Denver is such an incredible hotbed for music these days, and when they come home from every concert they are on fire. A few of their favorites are Ian Cooke, PeePee, The Wheel, The Fainting Fancies,Bela Karoli, Rachael Pollard, Laura GoldHamer, Golden Brown, Bad Weather California, Hunter Dragon, Abe Abraham, Gregory Alan Isakov, and there are so many more.  Paper Bird has played for every type of audience; young, old, drunk, sober, punk, hipster,  in churches, in alleys, fancy venues, street corners, a family bow hunting convention, a belly dancing convention, and many more.   Most people usually dig Paper Bird because they play from their hearts, so people can relate to and connect with them.

Esme informed me that Paper Bird goals are just to play music together and be creative, 'We love playing music together. We would love to be at a place where we can just play music for a living and spend all of our time being creative and we're almost there.' Paper Bird is not just friends in a band their all family according to Esme, “We love each other unconditionally and our music is a product of that love.  The whole is much greater than the sum of our parts. we all put our hearts into our music and people can feel that and see that and every audience member is a part of it. We don't see any separation between audience and performer. It’s a communal experience and everyone is involved.”  Paper Bird latest album 'Anything Nameless and Joymaking' sums up what the members of Paper Bird are all about, they want anyone who comes in contact with them or their music to have a very joyful experience through their music.  Paper Bird defining moment in their careers is anytime they get to play music together according to Esme, “When we lived in Denver we used to practice on our front porch. Neighbors would walk by and wave or stop and listen, and that is how we play every show, like we're in our living room or out on the porch. If it was more complicated than that, I’m not sure it would be as honest.”
