Interview With: Pat Kearns
Interview By: Portland Pete and Rance D. Reed from GreenlandLive.net

Blue Skies For Black Hearts started as Pat's solo project and slowly came to include everyone in the current line-up.  While it's not necessarily a democratic situation, everyone does participate equally although differently in the band.  Pat write the songs, but everyone is involved in the recordings and production of their records.  The band came to be known as Blue Skies For Black Hearts while Pat was looking for a name that was easy to google.  Blue Skies For Black Hearts is an invasion of the British pop era, Elvis Costello/Nick Lowe, Elliott Smith, 'basically, anyone who writes great melodies and lyrics.  We're also really into harmony and take plenty of cues from the Beach Boys'.

Blue Skies For Black Hearts is not exactly on the cover of Teen People or anything, so their audience consists of people who love music and do a lot of searching for well crafted pop music.  Their main goals as a group is to do what they love which is playing music, 'we want to do what we love and bring the type of music back to this world that is so lacking these days.'  The constant stream of new songs flowing through Pat's mind is a key that keeps Blue Skies For Black Hearts moving forward.  After asking Pat, What message/s are you delivering to the world?  He used an Andy Warhol quote that he feels sums up Blue Skies For Black Hearts really well,
Andy Warhol:
I think everybody should like everybody.
Gene Swenson: Is that what Pop Art is all about?
Andy Warhol: Yes, it's liking things.

There new album 'Serenades and Hand Grenades' is a big tip of their hats to The Beatles and the Brill Building pop of writers like Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Jerry Leiber and MikeStoller, and Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. The guys from Blue Skies For Black Hearts are into simplifying things; Kelly is the quiet one, Mike is the one all the girls love, and Paul is the sarcastic one.  A defining moment thus far  in their careers came last week, 'we played a show with The Posies, celebrating 20 years of their great pop music.  It was a big honor for us to be on the show....and also on the bill were The Nice Boys, a band that I have produced....it was our first time playing together and it felt like a big family reunion in many ways.'
